rails 3.0.3 postgresql_adapter does not work with postgres pure ruby drivers anymore

Reported by Edouard de Castro | December 13th, 2010 @ 04:00 PM

In active record 3.0.3 postgresql_adapter doesn't work with postgres-pr gem anymore, as it only requires 'pg' (unlike on 2.3.8).

adding back (like in rails 2.3.8)

begin
  require_library_or_gem 'pg'
rescue LoadError => e
  begin
    require_library_or_gem 'postgres'
    class PGresult
      alias_method :nfields, :num_fields unless self.method_defined?(:nfields)
      alias_method :ntuples, :num_tuples unless self.method_defined?(:ntuples)
      alias_method :ftype, :type unless self.method_defined?(:ftype)
      alias_method :cmd_tuples, :cmdtuples unless self.method_defined?(:cmd_tuples)
    end
  rescue LoadError
    raise e
  end
end

in postgresql_adapter.rb just before module Active Record declaration

and removing:

@@@require 'pg'@@@

from postgresql_connection method

fixes the problems...

But why was this changed in the first place? Only Pg module/gem should be used? (postgres-pr hasn't been updated since dec 2009...) OK, but then it shouldn't be mentioned that the adapter is also working with the pure ruby driver!?

(p.s. 'also had problems with - in initialize method - getting the TimeZone (w. pg 8.4), added rescue nil ...)

    p.s. postgresql_adapter.rb quote_string method also needs to be changed (take one from 2.3.8) ...
