has_many :through broken between 2.3.5 and 2.3.8

My schema is as follows:

Scene:
has_many :venues has_many :shows, :through => :venues

Venues:
belongs_to :scene has_many :shows

Shows:
belongs_to :venue named_scope :upcoming, lambda {|*num| { :order => 'date_time ASC', :limit => (num.first || 99999), :conditions => ['date_time >= ? ', Time.now.to_date], :include => [:venue] } }

The following query is ok in 2.3.5 but fails in 2.3.8:

@scene.shows.upcoming.size

The error message is:
