No Content-Length, ETag, or Last-Modified-Date in HEAD request response with send_file

Reported by twigbranch | November 2nd, 2010 @ 01:15 AM

Recently upgraded to Rails 3 and found that there are no longer 'Content-Length', 'Etag', or 'Last-Modified' headers in the response to a HEAD request when using send_file.

According to the HTTP spec, the 'Content-Length' should be there in a HEAD request response.

We've tested this on Apache/Passenger. Rails 3.01.

I'm seeing the same, but I also see that 'Content-Length' is forcefully deprecated in send_file_headers!

    Rails 2.3-stable however sends it.

I have not checked the HTTP specs but it might be intended, awaiting more confirmations from devs.

As a temporary solution it might not be too hard to publicize send_file_headers! and force a headers.merge!
