ActiveRecord "find" doesn't accept a :distinct parameter

Reported by Romain | December 22nd, 2010 @ 05:45 PM

When using AR's find method, there's no provision for passing a :distinct option.

Let's say I have a table "Messages", with a column "author_id". I'd like to be able to perform the following query :
SELECT DISTINCT author FROM messages;

I think it would be pretty sweet to be able to do something along the lines of
Message.find(:all, :distinct => :author)

So basically, here are my question :

  • Would that be a good idea ? I guess not, otherwise I assume it would have been done already...
  • If it is, I'd be glad to contribute a patch. Any hints about the proper way to implement that ?

    In the meantime you could use something like this:

    Message.group(:sponsors).all

    Although is not the same
