Not sure I understand the comment "I don't really think you need to be caching in dev mode anyway ;)"....... The need (or no need) in dev mode is not relevant. ...

Won't the changes using Marshall make caching work MUCH slower in production ?

Maybe the Marshall trick should only be used when in development mode (or better...
