    I see this same problem in rails3.
    Stefano's solution solves it. There's one problem with it though. It won't work if the string is frozen.

    Isn't there something more globally defined which would just need be to be included instead of defining the capture_stderr method ?

    You appear to be using the deprecated gem.
    However rails uses it's own deprecate internal methods. It's including this gem which breaks everything.
