Handle Net::HTTP NoMethodError bug in ActiveResource

Reported by Nick Ragaz | May 22nd, 2010 @ 10:53 PM

Versions of Net::HTTP in Ruby 1.8.7 up to r27955 attempt to close sockets that were never opened (http://redmine.ruby-lang.org/repositories/revision/ruby-187?rev=27955). This may happen if the site is down. This bug is present in the current version of Ruby Enterprise Edition (2010.01).

This patch for the current Rails 3 HEAD handles that NoMethodError and turns it into an ActiveResource::TimeoutError with a nil message. It includes a simple test.

Performance in later versions of Net::HTTP should not be affected.
